Tough Decisions in Tough Economic Times

Koby

Everyday I read in the paper or see news stories on pets being abandoned or given to shelters by owners who have found themselves financially unable to care for them anymore. Sometimes it is done maliciously or because the owner had no business owning a pet in the first place. I won’t say what I would like to do those individuals. But more often than not it is done by people that are truly desparate and don’t know what else to do. I can say by watching some of the interviews…this is not an easy decision that they have made and it affects them emotionally as well.

One interview I saw still sticks in my mind. It was hard to watch the emotions these people were going through. Because of what the economy had done to them, they had to make a very painful decision. They had to give up their two dogs, their “children”, and turn them into a shelter to be put up for adoption. You could see the pain and guilt they were going through. They had these dogs for years. What really got to me was when the husband looked at his wife, who was in tears, and told the interviewer how much of a failure he felt like. He said that was not what a man is suppose to do. Fortunetly, the dogs were adopted by a really nice family. Comforting maybe a little bit for the original owners but it will be something they will have to live with…or I guess in this case live without. I cannot imagine having to do that with my 17 year old buddy.

My final thought is this…if you find yourself in a situation where you can longer take care of your pet, PLEASE do not just leave them to fend for themselves in an abandoned house. Take them to a shelter. Yes, shelters are overwhelmed right now. But I am sure they would rather you drop them off instead of receiving them starved and sick from abandonment. If you are looking for a new pet PLEASE go to your local shelter to find one. They really are in desperate need of people wanting to adopt a pet.

And don’t forget to get all the necessities your new pet will need such as collars and leashes, dog beds and pillows, pet dishes and all natural pet food.
